SPRING II 2012 SEASON

THURS. MAY 10  I WISH

Directed by Hirozaku Kore-eda. Japan, 2011, 128 min.

Twelve-year-old Koichi lives with his mother and retired grandparents in Kagoshima, in the southern region of Kyushu, Japan. His younger brother Ryunosuke lives with their father in Hakata, northern Kyushu. The brothers have been separated by their parents’ divorce and Koichi’s only wish is for his family to be reunited. When he learns that a new bullet train line will soon open linking the two towns, he starts to believe that a miracle will take place the moment these new trains first pass each other at top speed. With help from the adults around him, Koichi sets out on a journey with a group of friends, each hoping to witness a miracle that will improve their difficult lives.

THURS. MAY 17 STELLA DAYS

Directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan. Ireland, 2011, 100 min.

A small town cinema in rural Ireland becomes the setting for a dramatic struggle between faith and passion, Rome and Hollywood and a man and his conscience. STELLA DAYS is the story of a man, a story about the conflict between love and duty, hope and faith, and between the excitement of the unknown and the security of the familiar. It encapsulates the dilemma of Ireland in the mid-1950s - on the cusp of the modern but still clinging to the traditions of church and a cultural identity forged in very different times. Starring Martin Sheen.

Fred Craden of the Cinema Arts Centre will be our guest speaker! A member since its inception in 1973, he hosts its Vic Skolnick Sunday Schmooze.

THURS. MAY 31 A CAT IN PARIS

Directed by Jean-Loup Felicioni and Alain Gagnol. France, 2010, 70 min.

From Folimage comes a beautifully hand-drawn caper set in the shadow-drenched alleyways of Paris. Dino is a pet cat that leads a double life: By day he lives with Zoe, a little mute girl. But at night he sneaks out the window to work with Nico - a slinky cat burglar with a big heart – as he evades captors and slips and swishes from rooftop to rooftop across the Paris skyline. When young Zoe decides to follow Dino on his nocturnal adventures and falls into the hands of Victor Costa, a blustery gangster, cat and burglar must team up to save her. A Cat in Paris is a warm and richly humorous love letter to classic noir films and the stylized wit of the Pink Panther cartoons – and Dino, the literal cat burglar, manages to steal the show with little more than a subtle swish of the tail and quiet mew.

"This unexpected Best Animated Feature Oscar nominee is sleek, stylish animated escapade that makes vivid, affecting use of its brief running time."
-Hollywood Reporter

Q&A after the film with Dave Jesteadt, a film programmer specializing in animation and a producer of the English-language version of A CAT IN PARIS.

Finding CarltonMON. JUNE 11 FINDING CARLTON

Directed by Susheel Kurien. USA, 2011, 73 min.
Featuring a peek at rare footage of American jazz musicians performing in India!

How did jazz from America find a home in India ? And how did India respond to it? Filmmaker Kurien tells the untold story that begins with Depression-era African American musicians journeying from Paris to Calcutta and Bombay. This captivating and unique film takes audiences on a richly atmospheric journey into India’s little-known jazz age--which lasted from the 1920s to the 1970s--through a portrait of the maverick guitarist Carlton Kitto, who chose to continue as a be-bop guitarist in the relative obscurity of Calcutta over emigration, commercial studio work, or Bollywood.

We will welcome the film's director Susheel Kurien--a jazz musician, himself, in addition to being a filmmaker--in conversation with local writer and jazz aficionado Michael Steinman, who writes the blog Jazz Lives.

Take this waltzMON. JUNE 18 TAKE THIS WALTZ

Directed by Sarah Polley. Canada, 2011, 116 min.

Michelle Williams stars in this latest film from Sarah Polley, director of the Oscar-nominated film Away From Her. Twenty-eight-year-old Margot (Williams) is happily married to Lou (Seth Rogen), a good-natured cookbook author. But when Margot meets Daniel (Luke Kirby), a handsome artist that lives across the street, their mutual attraction is undeniable. Warmly human, funny and bittersweet, TAKE THIS WALTZ deftly avoids romantic clichés and paints an unusually true and unsentimental portrait of adult relationships.

"Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen both hit career highs. Polley is an empathetic listener and shaper of fine performances."
- Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
