WINTER 2012 SEASON

JANUARY 12

NEWLYWEDS

Written and Directed by Edward Burns. USA, 2011, 93 min. Long Island Premiere.

When you get married, you're not just getting a husband or wife – you get the family, the friends, even the exes as Buzzy and Katy the eponymous newlyweds discover. Staying true to form and sharply examining sharply the trials and tribulations of modern relationships – writer/director/actor Edward Burns examines, with humor and unsentimentality, the early days of a couple’s marriage.

The closing night film of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, Burns takes a visually striking documentary approach to get to the core of his characters, following them over the course of three days. They are played with candor and confidence by an ensemble that includes himself, Caitlin FitzGerald, Max Baker, Marsha Dietlein Bennett, and Kerry Bishé.

Q&A after the film with one of the film's stars, Kerry Bishé, and Dr. Sam L. Grogg, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Adelphi University.

Kerry Bishé has already made a name for herself in the worlds of film, TV and theater. She is currently shooting the film ARGO directed by Ben Affleck and most recently starred as Lucy in the ABC series “Scrubs”. She made her Broadway debut as Clara in the Roundabout Theatre's production of PYGMALION opposite Jefferson Mays and Claire Danes. Prior to that, Bishé made her Off Broadway debut in the Irish Repertory's THE HAIRY APE, followed by her portrayal of the title role in Minetta Lane's production of MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE, directed by Alan Rickman. Additional film credits include SEX AND THE CITY: THE MOVIE, RED STATE, TURKEY BOWL, NICE GUY JOHNNY, MESKADA, MOTHERHOOD, THE WOMEN, THE UNDERSTUDY, and TV credits include “Life on Mars”, “Royal Pains”, and “Virtuality”.

Dr. Sam Grogg, Dean of Adelphi College of Arts and Sciences, is a member of the American Film Institute and co-founder of The Journal of Popular Film and Television and Magic Pictures. Dr. Grogg holds a Ph.D. degree with a specialization in popular culture and film from Bowling Green University; has produced for film, theatre, and television; and served as dean of the American Film Institute Conservatory and School of Communication of the University of Miami before coming to Adelphi this summer.

JANUARY 26

ULTRASUEDE: IN SEARCH OF HALSTON

Whitney Sudler-Smith. USA, 2010, 89 min. Long Island Premiere.

A glowing, prismatic portrait of the rise and fall of America's first celebrity designer – Halston – the man who was synonymous with fashion in the 1970s, and became the emperor of NYC nightlife. Interviews with friends and witnesses (including Liza Minnelli, Diane Von Furstenberg, André Leon Talley, Anjelica Huston, Bob Colacello, and Billy Joel, among others) round out this glittering evocation of the man who defined the most beautiful and decadent era of recent memory.

Q&A after the film with Dr. Steven Watson, a cultural historian who is particularly interested in the group dynamics of the twentieth century American avant-garde. He has written about the first American avant-garde, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Beat Generation. His most recent book is Factory Made: Warhol and the Sixties.

In the town of Martin, Tennessee, Chip Hines, a precocious six year old, has only known life with his two dads, Cody and Joey. And a good life it is. When Cody dies suddenly in a car accident, Joey and Chip struggle to find their footing again. Just as they begin to, Cody’s will reveals that he named his sister as Chip’s guardian. The years of Joey’s acceptance into the family unravel as Chip is taken away from him. In his now solitary home life, Joey searches for a solution. The law is not on his side, but friends are. Armed with their comfort and inspired by memories of Cody, Joey finds a path to peace with the family and closer to his son.
